We had only one day in Newport, Rhode Island to take tours of turn of the century mansions.

We were lucky to get a spot for one night.

There was a tiny cemetery in the RV park.

From 1714! This one is for a brother and sister, aged 19 and 24, who died 18 days apart.

Rock fences abound in the area.

We started at the Newport HIstorical Society building and bought tickets for touring the mansions.

We toured the most modest first: Cheptstow, built in 1861.

Next we toured Rosecliff, built in 1902.

Modeled after the Grand Trianon at Versailles.

It was built by heiress Tessie Oelrichs.

"The Great Gatsby" was filmed here.

I love marble lions.

This is the only modesty you'll see in the place.

Parts of "True Lies," "Amistad," and "27 Dresses" were also filmed here.

This "summer cottage" was built for parties.

Next we toured Chateau sur Mer.

It was built in 1852.

Many features were added later to change the style of the home.

Three generations of the Westmore family lived here.

Behind the house, temporary stables were set up.

It was "Coaching Weekend."

At different times during the day, people dressed in costume...

...and rode period buggies and coaches through the town.

All the horses were getting bathed.

But we never did get to see the coaches on parade.

This back gate is so intereting...

You can walk up the steps and perch on the seat at the top.

I loved this bicycle and its woven baskets!

Next: The Elms.

This place was built in 1901.

It included the very latest modern technology.

And some disturbing artwork.

Dipicting some morbid bible story no doubt.

We saved The Breakers for last.

This is the largest and most palacial of them all.

It was built by the Vanderbilts in 1895.

A 70-room summer retreat.

Next to our campground, we noticed a field full of horses.

I walked back with my camera and got to watch this polo match.

U.S. and Jamacian teams were practicing.

The real match would be on Saturday.

I'd never seen polo played before.

Because it was a practice, I got to stand right out on the field with them.

What a crazy, chaotic game.

It's boggling how they manage to hit that ball.

...and not just smash into each other.

Post practice game chat between teams.

The horses got to cool down and get bathed.

The next morning, we went back to The Breakers.

The coaches were supposed to come by at 10:15.

We waited for 90 minutes.

I chatted for a long time with this nice woman from New York.

And her granddaughter.

We finally gave up.

Instead, we went for a race-through tour of Marble House.

It was built in 1892 by Alva Vanderbilt and Richard Morris Hunt.

It is built entirely of marble... 500,000 cubic feet of it.

Complete with vomiting gods.

We were back on the road by noon.

It would be a long day of driving.
