Two nights in a so-so campground and a fun visit to Old Sturbridge Village.

Gypsy naps on the drive to Sturbridge.

She slept through all the beautiful fall foliage.

Our GPS took us down a dead end road and we had to disconnect and go back.

The drive was beautiful, though.

That night, Kate made an apple-cranberry gallete, barely making a dent in our cranberry haul.

Gypsy likes to play a high-five game with soft paws.

The Sturbridge campground certainly looked beautiful.

It had a nice little lake.

And beautiful trees.

But it was actually kind of run-down.

We went to nearby Old Sturbridge Village.

It's a recreated village from the 1830s.

The structures are all real houses and buildings from the era.

But many have been moved here from other areas.

Costumes in the gift shop.

Kate always did like to play dress-up.

The village buildings are all furnished in the period.

And most have guides in costume who demonstrate life in the 1830s.

Applesauce is cooked in a bed of coals on the hearth.

The first Murphy bed!

This shopkeeper guide is in charge of the general store.

It's stocked with antiques true to the day.

Tea from China was expensive.

Vinegar and wine stored in barrels.

Baskets, barrels, jugs and rakes.

Salted herring in boxes.

Spices, candlesticks, books, paper, pitcher, slates...

The attorney's house.

A simple bedroom.

Cozy attic room.

All the houses are heated by fire.

A stagecoach sits outside the tavern.

A tinsmith demonstrates a candle lantern.

The schoolroom.

The potter's kiln.

It takes so much wood to fire pottery, it was only done once a year.

The potters would pile up pieces all year long.

The potter guide built a pitcher while we watched.

He cranked the wheel with a foot pedal.

The potter guides make a lot of pieces to sell.

There was a farm, too.

With livestock.

Horned sheep.

Kate feeds one an apple.

This woman was feeding bottles of milk to the calves.

They wanted more.

This calf ate hay with the oxen.

Ox cart.

Chickens in the barn.

Looks like a gate I would build.

Farm house.

And shed.

Cart and shed.

This guide was cleaning up after making a pudding.

Hanging rags to dry.

The blacksmith had just finished working.

But he demonstrated the giant bellows to us.

Making yarn.

Covered bridge.

Bridge.

The sawmiller was finishing up, too.

Stagecoach in the low sun.

Interesting decor.

The ceiling was painted for the Masons who met there.

Cow in a barn.

The printer talked to us about the press.

They still make hand pressed invitations and such.

This kids were waiting patiently when we arrived home.

Could they be any sweeter?
