Two women, their golden retriever, and an orphaned kitten hit the road in an RV for one year of "pretirement"

Although the Corn Palace was a hokie letdown, the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead museum more than made the trip into South Dakota worth it.

Lots of hype in South Dakota about the Corn Palace.

It's decorated in ears of corn.

But when we saw it, it was under reconstruction.

Still murals made of corn.

But a bit of a let down after all those billboards.

We did get to meet Cornie, though.

We camped at Mitchell Lake Campground.

There was plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the late afternoon.

We gave Gypsy some outside time.

Her little eyes are open now!

There were stairs down to a small rocky beach.

The next morning, we stopped at Laura Ingall Wilder's homestead.

Now it's a hands-on museum, and you can camp in a covered wagon.

Old playground equipment.

The land is the Ingals' original homestead.

The Ingalls had four daughters.

I try out the sharpening stone.

A tar paper house was shown as another kind of house the Wilders lived in.

Pretty bare for a family of six.

Kate tries on a hat.

This replica was built just like the Wilders' house here.

It had four rooms.

All four girls slept in here.

A pump organ like the one I grew up with.

An old wagon plow.

Old barn.

We wondered if we could sneak Gypsy in for a drink.

This pony was just a couple days old.

The mom was already back at work.

Pulling kids on carts.

It was so tiny.

Maybe we need one in the RV.

He just roamed freely.

Kate fed him.

Such a sweetie.

This more recent building held demonstrations.

Making rope.

And twisting hay for the stove.

The stable and house.

Working windmill.

Wagons carried people out to the old schoolhouse.

And back.

Past the old church.

Sweet mules.

The driver lets all the kids have a turn driving.

Almost there.

The schoolhouse was actually in use into the 1950s.

A good supply of costumes for the kids.

The "teacher" helped them dress.

The teacher is actually a local teacher, and she gave us a good history lesson.

She had one of the kids read from an old book.

How many kids gazed out this window daydreaming?

The flag has 48 stars. When does that date it?

And back we went.

There were two wagons going back and forth.

That night, we had our first overnight in a Walmart parking lot.
