We drove through a safe pocket of a huge storm to get to the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula in Michigan.

We were lucky to get an unused host site at the full campground.

Gypsy and some of her many fans.

The next morning was beautiful, and I rode my bike into North Point.

Someone got a bargain on red paint.

This self-serve stand was written up in Living Magazine.

There were so many cherry orchards along the road.

With cherries ripe for the picking.

This, believe it or not, is the airport.

Kate met me in town.

We wished this shop had been open.

We got some lunch.

We drove further to Leeland and went to the beach.

A real, sandy beach.

I haven't since water this turquoise since the Carribean.

Gulls flew overhead.

Bailey one-ups Gypsy with this gorgeous fan club.

We stopped at Old Fish Town in Leeland.

It's the original fishing village.

But now has lots of shops.

A residence.

Shed turned to store.

"Help Wanted: Must be Cool and Kind."

Driving back, I snapped shots of the storm damage we'd seen the day before.

We must have driven through right after it happened.

Back at the campground, Kate fashioned a harness for Gypsy.

We walked Gypsy and Bailey to the lighthouse.

She wasn't so sure about it at first.

But got the hang of it quickly.

Quite an interesting planter.

When we get home, Kate will have collected enough rocks to make one for us.

There was a bowl of water for dogs.

But Gypsy only drinks from bottles.

The next morning, on our way out, we stopped at Christmas Bay.

Bailey's fan club in Leeland had told us about this beach.

It's maintained by the county, and only locals know about it.

Gypsy didn't like the waves.

Lots of rocks to look through.

I had no idea the Great Lakes could be so blue.

When we got near Glen Arbor, we saw the destruction we had nearly missed.

The highway was mostly clear now.

The chainsaws must have being going all day and night.

Some roads were still being cleared.

Highway 22 was passable only north of Glen Arbor.

Firewood will be cheap this winter.

The highway still had some hazards.

The entire national park was closed indefinitely.

Rangers stood guard at most entryways.

We stopped at Arbor Lake for lunch.

This was the closest we would get to Sleeping Bear Dunes.

We made lunch and sat outside.

Gypsy hates being left out.

I got this shot of a famous Glen Arbor barn on the way back to town.

The house in front is not kept up so well.

We walked around downtown Glen Arbor.

Even without power, there were lots of shops open in Glen Arbor.

Gas station turned into a shop.

My brother and his wife introduced us to Cherry Republic.

They sent us delicious foods from the store every Christmas.

We had to get some delicacies from their stores.

Without electricity, the menu was limited, but cheap.

We had to have some cherry pie.

This beautiful 7-month-old retriever belonged to the gardener.

The gardener was dealing with a mess of fallen trees and limbs.

Across the street was an art center.

People weren't the only survivors of the storm.

How was it for these little critters?

We worried about this man on the roof by himself.
