When we left the Adirondacks, we weren’t sure where we would stay that night, but we hoped it would be somewhere with a good view of the lunar eclipse. We pulled into two places on the shore of Lake Champlain, but both gave us the creeps. We crossed over into Vermont, feeling weary after a long day, and Kate found a place on our AllStays app that looked good. It was 12 miles down a two-lane road past stinky dairy farms, but when we got there, we were happy to find how pristine and inviting it was.
My face fell when the proprietor’s daughter told us they were full, but when I pleaded for even a space to park, she called her mom and gave us their last space, on the edge of a cornfield. We set up just in time to watch the sunset, then took the fur kids on a stroll down to the river.
What a gem of a place this is, tucked away between cornfields and river. It has a section for RVs, over a dozen cute cabins, a pool, hot tub, canoe rentals, playground, shuffleboard, horseshoes, outdoor fireplace and shelter… and it is kept so meticulously. I especially loved the Snack Shack with a stocked fridge, shelves of chips, and a few camping essentials all available on the honor system.
With Lake Champlain close by and the Otter River right there, this would be a wonderful place for a family reunion in the summer. So many times we find ourselves wishing we weren’t so rushed to get to the next destination. We were just so grateful to have landed here for the night.
The Lunar Eclipse
This was a full lunar eclipse and a “super moon,” an event that would not reoccur for over 100 years. And we had a view of it from Bessie’s doorstep. The eclipse would peak around 10:30, but it started around 9:00. I baked chocolate chip cookies while we waited, and when it started, we went to the hot tub for a soak.
A hot tub! What a luxury. And this one was small and private. It had a pergola over it, but we could see the moon low in the sky. We just laid back and soaked it all in… the warm bubbly water, the shadowed moon, the last of the summer’s crickets. God, how I’ve missed hot tubs.
We went back to the RV for the full eclipse, because I wanted to get out my tripod for a slow shutter speed. I set it up just outside our door, and it was just warm enough (especially after a hot soak) to sit outside and enjoy it. Bailey and Gypsy joined us. And when the eclipse was at its peak, we heard coyotes yipping and howling in the distance.
